The production, distribution, and storage of drinking water are subject to strict regulations. These requirements apply equally to the manufacturing of specialized, food-grade storage silos and to the maintenance of all equipment involved in drinking water treatment. Proper execution requires not only technical expertise, but also a solid industrial and logistical background. In this article, we outline what a full-service approach means in the manufacturing and maintenance of drinking water technology systems.
Special requirements of drinking water technology systems
Water is one of our most critical resources, which is why the design and maintenance of drinking water technology systems require specialized expertise and a high level of responsibility. These processes must take into account material selection, applicable regulations and permitting procedures, precise documentation of manufacturing and maintenance activities, as well as the industrial and logistical readiness and problem-solving capability essential for delivering a full-service solution.
Material selection – non-contaminating materials only
In Hungary, materials in contact with drinking water must comply with the requirements of Government Decree 201/2001 (X.25.). Only metals that do not contaminate the water, do not leach substances, and do not pose any health risk may be used in drinking water technology systems.
Stainless steel—particularly acid-resistant grades suitable for drinking water applications—is one of the most widely used and safest material choices. It does not require additional coating and fully complies with the hygiene requirements for drinking water systems.

Authorization requirements – based on NNGYK testing only
The approval of equipment used in drinking water technology systems is subject to strict testing procedures. For example, in the case of water storage tanks, the Nemzeti Népegészségügyi és Gyógyszerészeti Központ (NNGYK) conducts multi-month assessments to verify that no contaminants leach from the tank material that could compromise water quality. The authorization process also evaluates the risk of microbiological contamination, as well as the potential presence of undesirable taste and odor compounds.
If a product passes the immersion test, it may proceed to the formal authorization process.
Issued approvals are typically valid for five years, and only manufacturers holding a valid authorization are permitted to place the product on the market. Duna Steel Tech Kft. holds such authorization.
Process control – transparent and verifiable documentation
Beyond regulatory compliance, precise documentation is also mandatory. Throughout the entire lifecycle of drinking water technology systems—from manufacturing and commissioning to maintenance—comprehensive technical documentation must be maintained. This ensures full traceability of products and processes, supports quality assurance, and guarantees compliance with applicable regulatory requirements.
Specialized industrial and logistical expertise – we take the burden off the client
Both manufacturing and maintenance projects require tailored solutions. In addition to regulatory compliance, handling drinking water technology systems typically demands in-depth industry knowledge and, in many cases, strong logistical capabilities.
Our goal is to take the operational burden off our clients by delivering complete, turnkey solutions.
We rely on more than 10 years of experience in tank manufacturing, as well as in the production and maintenance of industrial components. When required, we involve qualified partner companies—for example, for the fabrication and registration of tank trailers, or for organizing the lifting and transport of equipment such as drum filters. Our clients receive a fully completed solution, ready for handover.
Our specialized, full-service drinking water technology projects – proven in practice
Recently, we delivered two specialized drinking water technology projects that clearly demonstrate the complexity of this field:
- For Tiszamenti Regionális Vízművek Zrt., we carried out the refurbishment of a drum filter and a microfilter.
- For Északmagyarországi Regionális Vízművek Zrt., we manufactured eight trailer-mounted water tanks with a capacity of 450 liters each.
Complete refurbishment and logistics of a drum filter
For Tiszamenti Regionális Vízművek Zrt., we carried out the complete refurbishment of a drum filter and a microfilter made of acid-resistant stainless steel and used at a water intake facility. The project was particularly special because we also handled the dismantling of the equipment on site. For this, we used a specialized crane together with the dedicated vehicle of our long-standing transport partner.
The refurbishment was completed in our workshop. As part of the process, we cleaned the surface by sandblasting and then repainted it. We also replaced the entire filter surface, changed the aged nozzles, and refurbished the gearbox.
Following this, we also carried out the return transport, on-site lifting, and recommissioning.

Authorized drinking water tanks mounted on trailers, delivered turnkey
For Északmagyarországi Regionális Vízművek Zrt., we manufactured eight trailer-mounted water tanks, each with a capacity of 450 liters, obtained the required approvals, arranged the production of the trailers, and completed their road registration.
Before production could begin, we had to manufacture a prototype tank, which was then subjected to a two-month immersion test by the Nemzeti Népegészségügyi és Gyógyszerészeti Központ (NNGYK). Following successful test results, we completed the authorization process, after which we obtained exclusive approval to manufacture these tanks for a period of five years.
The specialized trailers were manufactured by our partner company, and once the tanks had been installed, the client received the fully completed, approved, and road-registered trailer-mounted tank units ready for use.
